AHHH – Sun Ra.. I have always savored the sounds and sights of this genius. I recently had a conversation that reminded me of his brilliance, his boldness and his ability to go against the grain, while maintaining the integrity of jazz music. I am a connoisseur of Afrofuturism, whether in my imagination, in modeling, comics, or Afropunk. When I went to see Nigerian DJ Emeka Okboh at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s MIX, I was pleasantly surprised to see so many Clevelanders (native or not) dressed in African print garments and with an Afrofuristic flare.
Artist like Sun Ra and George Clinton have always allowed me to look at myself, my spirit, my thoughts, my creativity as a true expression of art. And that perhaps, I am not of this earth…
